Wrap up this winter in a festive throw blanket. We love the Swedish cabin pattern and rich red color, but what we love more is that it’s made entirely in the USA out of 100% cozy cotton. It also comes in forest green!

Tell Us Tuesday: What’s Your Holiday Décor Style?

Everyone has a different way of decorating for the holiday season. Some people go simple and elegant, others love cheery, colorful decor. We’re still trying to decide which way to go for our office decorations. How about you? Do you prefer the colorful, anything goes decoration style or a more simple, refined decoration?

Sparkling Paper Star Ornaments

These paper star ornaments are so pretty! I found this monogrammed paper star ornaments tutorial on That’s My Letter and I can’t wait to make these. I think I’m going to make a bunch, one for each family member (with their first initial in the center) and if I still have the gumption to keep going maybe I’ll make a couple as teacher gifts.

1. Prepare the paper rolls. Using old paperback books tear the pages into small rectangles. (These rectangles measure about 2.5″ x 2″). Roll the rectangle into a cone and hot glue:

  • 2. Each ornament uses 20 paper rolls, make a lot of rolls.
  • 3. For the base cut out cardboard stars. (This is a 3″ star.)
  • 4. Make the hanger using a needle and silver thread.
  • 5. Start by gluing the rolls on the points of the star:

  • 6. Then the cervices and then fill in between.
  • 7. To add glitter to the edges brush on white glue.
  • 8. Shake glitter over edges (do this over a piece of paper to collect excess glitter for reuse).
  • 9. For center monogram cut circle from cardstock, adhere letter sticker in center.
  • 10. Brush white glue onto letter.
  • 11. Shake glitter to cover letter. Let it rest and dry a bit before proceeding.
  • 12. Shake off excess glitter.
  • 13. Hot glue letter into center of star.

DIY Aluminum Lanterns

I love these gorgeous aluminum lanterns from Ruffled! She came up with these great DIY lanterns that would be perfect for Christmas decorating. I’m going to paint mine white like she did and scatter them around the dining room and living room. These look really versatile, too, so I could use them all year or even re-paint them a different color if I wanted to!

Materials:

  • • Perforated metal sheets or upcycle them from used radiator covers (found in places like here)
  • • Tin snips
  • • 20 or 22 gauge wire
  • • Flat pliers
  • • Spray paint

Instructions:

Create templates on a piece of paper to play with the proportions before you begin cutting the metal sheet. Once you have all the templates you’d like to use, outline them with a pencil on the metal sheet. Slowly cut your rectangles away. To create the round cylinders, I used the help of the spray can I used to paint them. Wrap the metal sheet cutouts around the can (or a bottle or jar) and roll them a few times. It doesn’t matter if the size of your lanterns are not same as your can-roller, this is just to help you get a round shape. Once you tie the ends you won’t notice any bends that you would have seen if you had tried by hand.

Thread both ends of your cylinder using 20 or 22 gauge wire and twist tight using pliers. Cut excess wire. Before spray painting, you can insert newspaper in the lantern to avoid spray paint from going through. This gives a two-tone coloring and it conceals the wire closure. To use them as vases, you can simply add kitchen-size glasses before adding flowers.

DIY: Fabric and Lace Lanterns

After much thought, I’ve decided to throw a small, classy get together for New Year’s Eve this year. I want to go for a “Sparkle and Snow” theme, so when I saw these fabric and lace lanterns on Two Shades of Pink I immediately bookmarked it. Not only do these fit in with my party theme, they look really easy to make. I’m beginning to get really excited about this party!

Materials Needed:

  • • Craft lace
  • • Modge Podge
  • • Lanterns (these are form Lowe’s)

Instructions:

  • 1. Paint your lantern with white paint (or any color paint you want).
  • 2. Use Mod Podge to paste craft lace and sparkly organza material to cover the glass. You can use a paint brush to spread it on or just use your fingers.
  • 3. After spreading the glue, smooth your fabric onto the glass.  Wait until they are completely dry before placing them back into your lantern. You really don’t have to be precise when you cut out the pieces of fabric.  Just lay the glass on top of the fabric and cut around it.  The edges are hidden on the inside.
  • 4. Be sure to place them inside with the fabric on the outside of the glass.

Other Ideas: You could also use Vellum paper or plastic paper. Tissue paper would work too and look lovely with that diffused glow look to it.  Wrap lace around glass votives or even large vases and place larger candles in them.
