Courtney’s Crafts: DIY Ombre Lampshade

This DIY project is an easy and inexpensive way to upgrade a boring lampshade into something beautiful! Ombre means “shaded” in French, and refers to the look of colors graduating from light to dark. This look is best done with different shades of the same color. For this project, I used dark and light green yarn to achieve this affect.

You will need:

• 1 White Lampshade
• 2-3 Colors of yarn
• Scissors
• Glue Gun

Steps:

1. Start with a white or light colored lampshade (preferably without texture).  You will need 2-3 colors of yarn.  For a true Ombre effect it is best to use different shades of the same color. Here, I used a light green and a dark green.

2. Start by gluing the yarn to the shade using the seam of the shade to help hide to end of the strand.  Begin wrapping the shade leaving space between yarn strands in places to add interest to the finished product.  Wrap the shade down to the bottom of the shade, make sure the yarn is wrapped taught but not tight and secure with a dot of hot glue.

3. This is what the lamp should look like after you’re finished with the first layer of colored yarn. Now, using the next color begin the same process a bit lower adding another layer.  Wrap the second layer down to the bottom of the shade gluing the end of the yarn so you cannot see it.

4. When you are finished lightly dot hot glue all the way around the bottom of the shade to prevent any unraveling.

Now all you have to do is put your lampshade on your lamp and enjoy!
